Synopsis

Adapted from a cult gothic novel, The Monk follows the tragic destiny of Brother Ambrosio in 17th century Catholic Spain. Abandoned at birth at the gates of a monastery and raised by the friars, he has become a preacher admired far and wide for his fervor and feared for his righteousness. Steadfast in his extreme rigor and absolute virtue he believes he is immune to temptation. But the arrival of a mysterious apprentice undermines his convictions, leading him down the path of sin.
