Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and based on Gila Almagor's international best-selling autobiographical novel, this intensely moving film chronicles one summer in the life of ten-year-old Aviya, whose warm, loving and fiercely independent mother is tortured by periodic mental breakdowns. Henya, the once beautiful and proud partisan fighter, is haunted by the memories of her husband's death in the holocaust. She now walks the thin line between sanity and madness attempting to forge a life for herself and Aviya in the newly established state of Israel. Both mother and daughter blister under the searing conformity of their new community, yet they never give up hope, refashioning reality to suit their needs.
