Trevor is a guy in his mid-twenties searching for his ideal girlfriend in all the wrong places. Trevor has no problems meeting women and getting them into bed. Trevor's problem is the fact that his ideal girlfriend is most likely found on the glossy pages of a fashion magazine.

Trevor charms three women in rapid succession: Clarissa, a sorority girl; Karen, an ex-girlfriend of his friend; and Lisa, the woman who comes closest to Trevor's ideal. But, as Trevor shares his love of sushi, fashion and vintage clothes with Lisa, he fails to notice her fading away to anorexia. Lisa pulls away from Trevor and he immediately moves to Laura, a member of a Grrrl band, who entices Trevor with ecstasy and bliss. Everything's great until he sees Lisa again. Unable to stop idolizing Lisa, Trevor faces the reality of losing the only relationship he has. A Girl is a Girl, with its indie soundtrack and incestuous twenty-something hipsters, does a compelling job of making the viewer wonder if love really exists.

A Girl is a Girl is an impressive debut by writer-director Reginald Harkema. Inspired by Godard, he eschews conventional cinematic techniques and has built a strong reputation editing some of the best of Canadian cinema. He received a Genie nomination for his work on "Hard Core Logo" and "Last Night".
