Opening 2000's Out on Screen Festival and Closing Toronto's Inside Out Festival, also winning Best feature in
the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, the Los Angeles Outfest Film Festival and the Newport International
Film Festival, Chutney Popcorn entertains with its wit, sensitivity and humour in its portrait of merging cultures
and family loyalties.
As a struggling artist, Honda-riding out-lesbian living with her white girlfriend, Reena feels she has nothing on
her older married do-perfect sister Sarita - except her ovaries, that is. When Sarita and her husband discover that
they cannot have children, Reena offers to serve as a surrogate mother. Trying to convince her girlfriend, Lisa
(Jill Hennessey), that they can do this together is just the start of Reena's problems. Soon enough, Reena's family
and friends pull away convinced that Reena's decision is a bad one.
Chutney Popcorn, with Indian traditions on the one hand and modern New York City queer lifestyles on the other,
offers up an interesting and comedic mix about the tensions and negotiations between individual desires and parental
expectations. Ganatra stars alongside Jill Hennessy (TV's Law and Order), Majur Jaffrey (Heat and Dust) and Sakina
Jaffrey (Majur's real-life daughter). With a stellar star-studded cast, this delightful comedy will keep you entertained with its humour and its heart.
Nisha Ganatra is the talented young Canadian born director/writer of "Junky Punky Girlz", the highly acclaimed and
prestigious NYU's Tisch fellowship award winner. While attending NYU, Ganatra studied with Spike Lee and Martin Scorcese.
Chutney Popcorn is her first feature film.
