Chill Out - a film by Andreas Struck

Official Selection: Toronto International and Edinburgh Film Festivals

“Andrea Struck…makes his cool and hip directing debut with a Fassbinder-esque tale.”
Edinburgh Film Festival

Johann is a gay thief, hustling older men for money and moving from city to city when the law takes notice. Max is a lonely young security guard, instantly attracted to Anna, a thirty-something insurance clerk. They all live in Berlin and move to the rhythms of New Germany – a society redefining itself after the Cold War era. Johann, Anna and Max become intertwined in a triangular relationship sharing their love, affections, bodies and anxieties in Anna’s apartment. The three friends spend most of their time in clubs dancing and making themselves open to whatever opportunities cross their paths. Like the style of the club music – trance - the characters flow in and around each other in a way that makes them rethink themselves socially, culturally and sexually.

A dynamic view of a triangular relationship and the myth of metropolitan life.

Andreas Struck was born in Cologne, Germany in 1965 and studied literature and acting before directing his first play in 1987. He worked on Derek Jarmans’ films Edward II (1991) and Wittgenstein (1993), as well as various other films, both as script supervisor and assistant director. Chill Out is his feature film debut.
